Every summer Ibiza attracts all kinds of A-List celebrities ranging form athletes, actors and musicians to CEOs and monarchies from all over the world. The silent island as we knew it, has become a centre for the jet set with luxury tourism rivalling destinations such as Saint-Tropez, Monaco and Portofino.
Michael Leifheit gives us his point of view on this situation and predicts a very positive future for us.The hippie island or the silent island as it used to be known, has evolved into an exclusive luxury tourism destination, yet without compromising its hippie and rebellious essence that has characterised it in the 70s and 80s when Coral Yachting was founded. From the marine point of view, these changes have been reflected in the development of infrastructures and services offering moorings for mega yachts of up to 185 meters long at the very foot of Dalt Vila located in the old part of Ibiza town.
It seems that Ibiza is replacing the French Riviera as one of the most desired destinations for the wealthy, famous and ultra-demanding audience that is looking for the most exclusive services.
Among the most significant ports we can find Marina Botafoch with moorings of up to 30m, Marina Ibiza and Ibiza Magna with spots of up to 60m as well as the newly opened Sovren Ibiza with moorings of up to 185m lenght. The ports do have mooring spots, the problem is to find the available ones. At the beginning of the year, most ports on the island would put out a “July and August full” sign. With the highest price per square metre in Europe, next to Monaco, Ibiza has turned into a real focal point of the Superyacht scene of the Mediterranean, both for boat owners and rental clients.
The luxury hotel deals have also been expanded with more than 15 five-star hotels on the island in 2018. The most notable is the 2016 inauguration of the Gran Hotel Montesol (by Hilton 5*) in Ibiza town centre as well as the newly opened Nobu Hotel in Talamanca Bay. At the beginning of the coming season, Seven Pines Resort will open its doors in Cala Compte and in 2020 a luxury brand Six Senses will open a new complex in the area of Cala Xarraca. Several world-renowned
chefs have also moved to the island to develop their menus and match the high expectations of their clients .
Chef Paco Roncero who is in charge of Sublimotion at the Hard Rock Hotel. He promises a culinary journey for all the senses with a “gastronomic show" that costs €1,500 per person and a single table for 12 guests. Other examples of the haute cuisine and leisure are unique concepts that mix performance and dining, such as Heart at Ibiza Gran Hotel or Lío which is a club-restaurant-cabaret in Marina Ibiza where you finish your night to the rhythm of the most fashionable DJ's.
Behind this luxury and exclusivity scene, it is still possible to find charming and authentic places where the upper-class tourists are unnoticed or can appear as locals. It is precisely this essence and magical energy that each year attracts thousands of tourists that still encounter places on the island where they can find a physical and mental escape.
